My name is Colene Evans-Allen. I've just recently completed a five week training program from the Region of Waterloo, and a course on Child Nutrition and Cooking from Stanford University. I am starting my new adventure as a Community Nutrition Worker ( CNW) in Cambridge, Ontario. A CNW is not a Nutritionist, Dietitian, or qualified medical professional. A CNW is a community member (peer) who works with others in their neighbourhood to promote mutual learning and support for those that are low-income and struggle to get healthy food or to eat healthy food.
More information on the CNW program can be found here.
I'm not qualified to replace a nutritionist, doctor, or dietitian. What I can do is encourage and support people in making healthy changes to their diet and food choices. I don't specialize in any particular type of diet, either for weight loss or a specific medical condition. That said, I'm passionate about cooking, love eating homemade food, and have a decent amount of skill in a kitchen.
I will be available to the residents of my neighbourhood every Tuesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm at the Community Centre, and I look forward to working with the residents of my neighbourhood to support and help them with their issues around food.
This blog is a personal journal of sorts to support the work I will be doing as a CNW. It's not affiliated with the Community Centre I work for, nor the Region of Waterloo. It's a method of reaching more folks and helping to change how and what we eat. I hope you find it helpful and enjoyable. I plan to make a post each week. Feel free to post questions, feedback, and comments on the blog posts.
Remember, if the food you're eating has no nutrition label on it, chances are it's healthier for you ;-)
Best,
Colene
